Decision includes weapons sales to Saudi Arabia.
President Joe Biden placed a temporary hold on the sale of U.S. weapons to several countries in the Middle East that were initiated by President Donald Trump.
Billions of dollars’ worth of 56 F-35 fighter jets were going to the United Arab Emirates, along with other arms for Gulf Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia. The sales were, in part, said to be a deterrent to aggression by Iran.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken applauded the work of the previous administration in securing several peace agreements between Israel and Arab nations, but said President Biden’s team is “trying to make sure that we have a full understanding of any commitments that may have been made in securing these agreements.”
“When it comes to arms sales, it is typical at the start of an administration to review any, any, any pending sales to make sure that what is being considered is something that advances our strategic objectives and advances our foreign policy,” said the new secretary of state. “So that’s that’s what we’re doing at this moment.”
